The programme will support your career development into a permanent role with SSE that reflects your experience and passion.
What will I do on the programmes?
Depending on the programme you choose, you could be involved in a broad range of exciting projects across the UK and/or Ireland. All roles are likely to involve some travel to other sites to gain practical exposure to a wide range of business areas, therefore a full UK driving licence would be an advantage but is not essential.
Here’s a flavour of some of the exciting initiatives you could be involved in, for each Division.
CUSTOMERS (Dublin, Belfast, Reading) – helping our customers to have efficient and sustainable energy solutions is at our core. Throughout your placements you’ll get to see the full spectrum of operations that make up our B2B Business Energy and B2C Airtricity businesses in the UK and Ireland.
TRANSMISSION (Perth, Glasgow) – here you’ll work within the Business Planning & Commercial team to support a range of business activities from project development, regulatory submissions, data analytics, strategy and business controls to gain a broad understanding of the dynamic and growing business unit. You’ll also gain wider exposure with the capital delivery, engineering and operational teams to gain an appreciation of the full project lifecycle and underpinning governance processes.
DISTRIBUTION (Reading, Glasgow, Portsmouth) – working within our Distribution business you’ll be at the forefront of seeing how our network operates. You’ll be involved in projects and activities that help us ensure our network is not only running effectively, but is continually utilising innovative and commercially viable new technologies and efficient ways of providing energy to all customers.
ENTERPRISE DISTRIBUTED ENERGY (Reading)- working within a diverse, dynamic and growing business, you’ll have the chance to learn about commercial management, proposal preparation, business development, and business sector support. With opportunities across our Commercial and Business Development teams you’ll experience the end-to-end process from bid preparation and submission, right through to contract award, contract execution, and ultimately asset management.
ENTERPRISE TELECOMS (Reading, Perth) – we are on an exciting journey through our Joint Venture with Infracapital, to grow our fibre infrastructure assets, providing primarily lit services to B2B customers. Here, you will get involved in a variety of key projects, and will support the development of comprehensive project plans. You’ll learn all about the telecoms business and build a great amount of experience in this growing, fast-paced sector.
ENTERPRISE TELECOMS, MARKETING (Reading) – this role is available specifically for someone with a marketing/comms degree background, where you’ll co-ordinate, run and manage internal comms.
THERMAL ENERGY (Perth, Dublin):- In line with SSE’s low-carbon vision, our £350m Keadby 2 project is set to be the cleanest and most efficient CCGT in Europe. We’re developing new energy-from-waste facilities, including the £325m Ferrybridge Multifuel 2, which will help divert millions of tonnes of waste from landfill. We operate over 40% of the UK’s gas storage capacity, offering valuable flexibility and hedging services to the UK and interconnected gas markets. In our Commercial team, your focus will be on monetising our assets – ensuring our new and existing thermal plant profitably delivers the services that energy markets need.
What do I need to join?
For this programme, you’ll ideally have a minimum of a 2:2 degree in a business / commercial / numerical degree discipline. This may include but is not limited to Business Studies, Business Admin, Economics, Mathematics, Accounting & Finance, Commerce, Legal, Procurement, Statistics or other business-related discipline. Consideration will also be given to students with an engineering or STEM qualification for some roles.
We’d love you to have practical work or project experience that reflects your passion for business, as well as demonstrable experience of working in a team. You’ll also be comfortable working to and setting stretching individual targets and using your own initiative to overcome challenges.
You should have an interest in the energy sector, and show alignment with SSE’s core values. We also ask that you have a flexible approach to work locations and be genuinely committed to developing a career with us – as we are with you.
